Visible Trans - Trans Community Exhibition
"Great! I’ve missed the bus again. And I didn’t pack lunch; need to buy it, I hope I’ll have time for that... Anyways, a half-an-hour long lunch break is just too short; I can hardly get to the restaurant when I’ve got to come back... "
Are you familiar with these thoughts? We all face them in our everyday lives. These petty inconveniences reach each of us, especially if you are a little bit lazy. But what would you say if I told you that these lines were thought by a transgender person the other day? I assume you would say nothing. And indeed, there is nothing strange if you think about it. He is late, he has no lunch, and he wonders if he could buy something, I think we can all identify with such situations.
Let us stop here for a moment. Why is it that if the word "transgender" comes up in connection with someone, many of us tend to be surprised and may quickly look for our preliminary ideas about transsexuals? And as a result we may turn to the person with a rather distant attitude. It's unusual, that's true, but not as different as many people think. Our protagonist, who at this time is hopefully buying lunch at a nearby restaurant, gets stuck on the treadmill just like a cisgender person does. He encounters exactly the same situations in life that anyone goes through while trying to get along. And our ways are also not really different, but the only thing that may differ is the attitude how the majority of the society turn to transgender people.
That is the very reason why the Visible Trans Community Exhibition has been set up. Its aim is to help the audience familiarize with the feelings, thoughts and experiences of transgender people in order to show them how exciting, creative, deep and real they are, just like cisgender people. Life is depicted in photographs, narratives, poems, special objects, or in the combinations of them to bring this not-that-mysterious world closer to those who are interested in it. Currently, five of our members display their artworks on community roll-up posters, which are practical, mobile and thus provide a very good platform for our constantly expanding travelling exhibition, which is available in Hungarian and English.
We definitely recommend you to visit this unique themed exhibition! It gives a new perspective and helps to increase acceptance in our country. That is why we proudly offer our help to set it up for anyone who is interested; at festivals, community houses, community spaces and cultural centres at home or abroad.
